Culture is the beliefs, values, behavior and material objects that characterizes a people and constitutes their way of life.
The Nigerian story is hardly ever told without mentioning its great diversity in culture and the events which occurred during the colonial rule. Prior to this nation existing, these cultures, being unique as they were, had a more authentic heritage than is known today. I am interested in the tensions and elements that have come to exist as a result of this external influence and how it has altered the mentality of the contemporary people of these cultures.
Documenting from an experiential perspective, I’ll explore the tensions between authenticity of cultural heritages and the disruptions that come with the slow westernization in the post-colonial era. I haven’t had an in-depth experience of my native culture but this will be a slow path to redemption for me, the essence of culture.
